A Turkish Treasure
Now visitors to the ancient kingdom of Cappadocia, in Turkey's Central Anatolia, can enjoy exquisite lodgings while exploring the fantastical terrain and historic caves of the region. Esbelli Evi, in the town of Ürgüp, is run by owner Süha Ersöz, a former lawyer. His new hotel is actually a restored seven-room cave house. All of the rooms' walls feature the striated, pale ocher rock for which Cappaddocia is famed, and suites are named for their distinguishing features. The fireplace room boasts a fireplace, of course, as well as an extraordinary carved wooden armoire and an antique Turkish cabinet. The common rooms display Turkish rugs, Ottoman divans, antiques and Ersöz's impressive collection of jazz and classical compact disks. Breakfasts are traditional, offering bread, hard-boiled eggs, olives, feta cheese, homemade jams and freshsqueezed orange juice and coffee. If the weather is fine, guests can eat breakfast on the balcony, which has a breathtaking view of the valley. Intrigued? Well, reserve early, because Esbelli Evi's reputation is spreading quickly.
